It was May Day, Moscow was in joyous mood, and the demonstration
was slowly passing Lenin's tomb, where First Secretary, Nikita Khrushchev
was taking the salute. Suddenly a shot rang out - but hit one of the
Marshals, standing ten places from Khrushchev.
Someone was arrested with a rifle, across the square in GUMs, who
turned out to be the Soviet, Olympic rifle shooting champion. At the
trial, where guilt was not disputed, the judge asked him, "But there's
one thing I don't understand, comrade. You are a champion sharpshooter
and yet you missed Comrade Krushchev by a large margin."
"Well, Comrade Judge," replied the accused,"it's very difficult
to get a good aim when you've got hundreds of people pressing up against
you shouting "shoot! shoot!"
